What is the WordMasters Challenge? The WordMasters Challenge is a national competition for students in grades 3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. The WordMasters Challenge helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Based on word lists shared about month before each test, students explore words and search for connections between them in order to complete word analogies.
When does it take place?
There are three competition dates throughout the year. The first one will take place in November before Thanksgiving. The first set of words will be released at the beginning of October.
Who administers and who takes the test?
* Ms. Mueller and Ms. Lauer will proctor the tests.
* Anyone who signs up will take the test. (NOTE: All Level 2 and 3 Advanced Academics ELA students are automatically signed up to participate.)
* The test is taken individually: 30 minutes; 20 questions.
* There is a separate test for each grade level.
* Any testing accommodations normally extended to a student will be given for this test as well.
Why should my child participate?
* WM introduces new vocabulary to students throughout the year.
* WM encourages student to explore parts of speech, word derivation, synonyms and antonyms among other language features.
* WM challenges students to complete analogies based on relationships among words they have learned.
* WM encourages metaphorical and divergent thinking while looking for connections between words.
Participation is optional and is primarily independent study. We will have resources posted on Schoology, but it will be something your child should prepare for outside of school. To access the resources on Schoology, your child will have to login to Schoology and head to the Enrichment Course. NOTE: There is not a way for parents to access the resources. Your child must be the one logging onto Schoology.
