STOMP Troopers 2020 Volunteer Application
MISSION
We will be building social and creative skills while preparing for participation in a mainstream Mardi Gras parade, the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus.
WHO
22 participants ages 9-21 with autism and related special needs will participate. Participants may have any level of verbal, social or fine motor ability. However, we do require that they meet behavioral requirements (e.g. no cursing, hitting, bolting, able to work on tasks for 10+ minutes).
HOW
Through a series of weekly 90-minute creative workshops, participants will create their own costumes, throws, props and instruments. They will socialize, engage in team building, rehearse and learn music skills from professional jazz musicians. Facilitation will be provided by an art therapist, special needs music instructor, occupational therapist, and a behavior therapist.
WHERE/WHEN
The program will take place at Tulane University in Boggs room 104 and the Maker Space, located on Engineering Road, on Saturdays from 12:30pm to 2pm as well as at First Grace Church, 3401 Canal St (Mid City) on Mondays from 6pm to 7:30pm from Jan 4th-27th. There will also be select off-site meetings, including a post-party at Preservation Hall and two weeknight dress rehearsals to be held near the actual parade route. The parade itself will be held on Feb. 1st at 7:00 pm, with a private pre-party/downtime in the neighborhood starting at 5:30 pm.
