28 August 2019: Workshop on supporting emergent reading (3–6 year olds) | Application form
Registration for this workshop closes on 21 August 2019.
About the workshop
We know that young children find it easier to read when they have the language they need in order to understand what they are reading. Many children have limited language learning opportunities in their early years, and do not begin school with strong oral language they need to express their ideas and explain their thoughts. Many are also learning to read in a second language.

In addition to needing strong language skills, children need to have some basic letter sound knowledge. These are important foundations for their journey as readers.

In this workshop, we will share ideas for supporting the development of young children’s emergent reading.
The focus will be on:
· Understanding how children’s reading develops
· Telling and reading stories to build language and a love of books and stories
· Building awareness of print around us
· The value of pretend reading
· Fun games to introduce and build letter sound knowledge
