FROM PEANUTS TO PEANUT BUTTER
Do you like peanuts? Then say “thank you” to the Spanish conquistadors. They discovered peanuts in South America and brought them to Europe more than 500 years ago. From Europe, peanuts got to Africa and Asia and became a common ingredient in many foods.
According to experts, peanuts came to the USA in the late 1700s. Soon, American farmers began to grow peanuts and they became a popular food. There were street vendors who sold peanuts and people ate them in theatres and even in church! They also used them in cooking.
In the 1890s, some people in the USA began to make peanut butter. Dr Ambrose Straub made a. Peanut paste for his patients. He wanted to make a healthy food that was easier fo old people without teeth to eat. Another doctor who also started to make peanut butter for his patients was John Harvey Kellogg. Not many people liked the taste of the original peanut butter. It was a paste which wasn’t salty or sweet, like mot peanut butter today.
In 1922, Joseph Rosefield added salt and sugar to peanut butter and many more people started to enjoy it. The salt and sugar also kept the peanut butter fresh for a long time. This, and new, more sophisticated machines for making peanut butter, made it possible to produce it in large amounts.
Since the mid-1940s, peanut butter has been one of the most popular foods in the USA. Americans eat nearly 320 million kilos of peanut butter every year! American astronauts have even taken peanut butter into space. The Inca people in. South America probably never thought about their peanuts going so far away!
