Learning to Collaborate: Navigating Community Partnerships as Archaeology Students

Community collaboration is increasingly recognized as an essential part of archaeological practice, but students often face unique opportunities and challenges when engaging with communities. This luncheon will focus on defining collaboration, exploring pathways for building meaningful partnerships, and discussing the realities of conducting collaborative work as a student researcher working with descendent communities, stakeholders, and rightsholders. Through conversation with our panel experienced in the different facets of collaborative work, participants will consider questions of responsibility, reciprocity, ethics, and sustainability while examining both the possibilities and constraints of student-led community engagement. The goal is to provide practical guidance and foster discussion about the future of collaborative archaeology.
