Join us on January 12th, 2023 to kick off the new year by advocating for a budget that invests in communities NOT corrections! Each January Governor Newsom releases the Proposed state budget, which details California's goals and priorities for the forthcoming year. The proposed state budget sets the stage for our advocacy throughout the year to ensure our demands are heard and implemented by the time the Enacted state budget is released in June.Â
As a result of continual pressure and advocacy from folks inside and out of cages, it is clear our demands are breaking through to state officials. For instance, on December 6th, 2022 CDCr announced the closure of Chuckawalla Valley State prison, the ending of a $32 Million contract with California City Correctional Facility, and deactivations of 6 facility yards. Now we must put the pressure on to ensure the legislature, CDCr, and Governor Newsom to continue the momentum...
In working towards our demand of closing 10 prisons by 2025, we're fighting for:
💥More prisons to close for good in 2023Â
💥The adoption of a statewide, concrete plan for prison closure that includes criteria from directly impacted people and centers community investment
💥An end to CDCR’s infrastructure spending and reductions to California's $18.6 billion corrections budget
