Molybdenum Extraction and Its Alloying Benefits

Presenters:

David Cottrell is a Chief Engineer with Climax Molybdenum.  He has been with Climax for 19 years and is part of the Molybdenum Technical Solutions group.  In this role he assists the customer and sales group with Molybdenum issues and usage. He also helps support Climax’s downstream operations with technical support and advancing technology.

Dr. Chris Ramsay is a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), specializing in ferrous physical metallurgy.  He has served Missouri S&T from 1989 to 2025 in a variety of roles including the ISS Professor and, most recently, the Director of the Student Design Center (for the past 12 years) retiring in 2025.  Among other assignments, he serves Climax as a principal physical metallurgist working with the Advanced Steel Products and Processing Center (ASPPRC) at CSM.

Presentation Abstract:

This presentation will introduce Climax Molybdenum’s role in the molybdenum and take you through the production and markets we serve.

Ramsay will briefly review some of the newest research work using conservative levels Molybdenum in conjunction with other alloying elements to produce enhanced microstructures and consequently properties such as strength, toughness and hydrogen resistance. Finally, he will discuss “Bainite Hardenability”, a term coined by Pickering in 1967, describing the effects of Molybdenum on continuous cooling transformation diagrams to predict microstructure.
