D2/D3 Walking Pass Application

Dear Parents of Walking Students,

We are thrilled that your family is part of our school community and that your student(s) have the opportunity to walk to and from school. At APA, student safety is our top priority, and we strive to be one of the safest and most secure schools in Utah. To ensure the safety and well-being of all our students, it is crucial that we follow our established safety procedures and that parents provide informed consent for their walking students. Thank you for your cooperation in adhering to these important measures.

School Walking Procedures:

Eligibility:
Walking Passes are available to students who live within two miles of the school.

Passes:
To receive a Walking Pass, please complete and submit the “Walking Pass Agreement” form. Qualified students will be issued a personalized Walking Pass, which must be displayed prominently while walking to and from school, preferably attached to their backpack or book bag. Students without a Walking Pass will be held at school until they can be picked up. Replacement passes are available for a $1 fee.

Picking Up a Walking Student:

If you need to pick up walking students there are 2 ways to do so:

  1. Preferred Method: Use carpool. Please plan ahead and inform your student(s) if they will be picked up via carpool.
  2. Check-Out Method: Park and come into the school to check out your student(s). IMPORTANT: Check-outs must occur during our designated check-out window 15 min before check.

Hazards:
While we strive to ensure a safe walking environment, there are inherent risks involved, such as severe weather, vacant properties, hazardous conditions, unrestricted traffic, and encounters with strangers.

Recommendations:
To enhance your child’s safety while walking, we suggest the following:

  • Ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
  • Discuss potential risks with your child and how to stay safe, including:
    • Obeying all traffic signals and following crossing guard directions.
    • Walking in groups rather than alone.
    • Knowing how to respond if approached by a stranger.
    • Walking only on sidewalks and avoiding park strips or roadways.
    • Going directly home and calling before changing plans or going elsewhere.

Thank you for your attention to these procedures and for helping us maintain a safe environment for all students.

I have read this document and understand the inherent risks present outside the school, some of which are listed above, and my obligation to contribute to the safety of the school community by complying with the school’s procedures.  I further understand the school cannot assume responsibility for my student(s) until they enter the school building and cannot be responsible for their safety once they exit the building.  The school’s liability is limited to care for children once they arrive and are inside the school and ends when they exit the building.I accept all responsibility and liability for my student’s safety prior to their arrival inside the school and following their exit from the school.
