Per South Carolina Code of Laws and the James Island Charter High School By-Laws, James Island Charter High School is only required to transport students who are assigned to Attendance Zone 3, which is James Island and Folly Beach. Transportation for open enrollment students is the responsibility of the parents or guardians.
HOWEVER, the JICHS Board of Directors has approved funding for the Magnet Bus Service for the 2017-18 school year. The Magnet Bus Service will again send two buses to Johns Island and two buses to West Ashley. Each bus has a capacity of 43 students. Historically, the Magnet buses operate at capacity - so, in the event more students request the service than the buses can accommodate, the following criteria will used to select students:
Preference will be given to students based on their grade level (12th, 11th, 10th, then 9th). Once we reach a grade level where demand exceeds capacity, we will conduct a lottery within that grade level for the remaining seats. Students not selected during the lottery will be added to a wait list in the order in which they were selected.
If demand does not exceed capacity, then we will not conduct a lottery. Furthermore, any remaining seats at that time will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
In an effort to provide quick feedback to our families so that they can make best educational decision for their child, the deadline for the Magnet Bus Application will be June 9th, 2017 at 3:00 pm. We hope to provide feedback to those that apply for this service by June 15th, 2017 via the email addresses provided below. If email is not an option, then you may contact the main office during regular business hours at 843-762- 2756. Cost for the Magnet Bus Service will be $100 per semester or $200 for the entire school year (see below for more details). Payment will be accepted starting on August 3rd, 2017 and must be submitted by August 8th, 2017 (Fact and Fee Week). Otherwise, you risk losing your seat and being added to the wait list. Remember, riding on this bus is a privilege. Students who violate the JICHS Student Code of Conduct may be dismissed from this service. NO MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED IN THE CASE OF DISCIPLINARY DISMISSALS. Also, because the Magnet Bus Service operates at capacity, students are not permitted to switch from one bus to another. Students are expected to arrive at their bus stops 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time.

Your information will be provided to the bus driver in order to ensure that only registered students ride on the bus.
