Youth Mental Health First Aid Registration Form 4/30/2020
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is training for non-mental health professionals on how to recognize and deal with students, parents and co-workers who might be exhibiting symptoms of a mental disorder. YMHFA aligns with ISBE social emotional learning standards and with the readiness and emergency management phase: prevention and mitigation. Just as CPR training helps a lay person without medical training assist an individual who is not breathing, mental health first aid training is designed to give skills necessary for school staff to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Audience Focus:
Teachers, Support Staff, Building/District Administrators, Non Educators
*Participants may receive Administrator Academy or Professional Development Hours

Outcomes:
Participants will understand:
● The signs and symptoms of common mental disorders of students compared to typical adolescent development.
● Personal biases related to common mental disorders and how these biases impact interactions with individuals exhibiting behaviors symptomatic of these disorders.
● Best practice interventions for non-mental health professionals to ensure professional and appropriate responses to individuals with mental disorders.
● The role of social emotional learning (SEL) in student behaviors and academic achievement.
● The skills necessary to support non-mental health school staff members in addressing mental health needs of all stakeholders.
