2020 OSS Skin Swimmer Pass Application Form
Entry to The Outdoor Swimming Society 2020 event is sold on a wetsuit compulsory basis. This is because over the course of an event that lasts several hours everyone's body will cool and most people will be at risk of developing some level of hypothermia. There are some great articles about how the body reacts to cold water on the OSS website at www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com.

If you wish to swim skins, or in a shortie, please fill in this application form.

Full length triathlon/ swimming wet suits ( a minimum of shoulder-to-below the knee neoprene) are compulsory unless by prior arrangement through skins swimmer applications, or if you have previously been granted a Skin Swimmer Pass for The Outdoor Swimming Society's events. To allow us to give approval, we ask for your previous experience of extensive outdoor endurance swimming prior to the event to be documented and approved, via this Skins Swimmer application form.

Deadlines for Skin Swimmer Pass applications are:

Bantham Boomerang: Midnight, 17th May 2020
Sunrise Swoosh: Midnight, 17th May 2020
Dart 10k: Midnight, 26th July 2020
Hurly Burly: 9th August 2020

Decisions on applications will be made within one week of the Skins Swimmer application deadline for each event. If swimming more than one event your application will apply for all events.

We advise those who are still developing their experience in skins swimming to apply close to the deadline when they have more experience of the training they have already undertaken, rather than complete the form earlier with the training they expect to do.

To grant Skins Swimmer status we are looking for three things:

1. Previous documented experience of long distance swimming without a wetsuit in similar temperatures, e.g. the Channel, Windermere one-way, BLDSA events, Swimtrek.

2. Current training at similar water temperatures to the event(s) over distances and times expected for those events - around 15 °C/ 12 km/ 3 hours for the Bantham Boomerang, 15 °C/ 6 km/ 1.5 hours for the Sunrise Swoosh, 15 °C/ 10 km/ 3 hours for the Dart 10k, and around 12 °C/10k/2 hours for the Hurly Burly.

3. Willingness to undertake a long distance practice swim of a similar distance and a similar temperature prior to the event, to ensure you do not become hypothermic. This swim will need to be witnessed by a fellow swimmer, who should sign and date your test swim form, which you will sent with the response to your skins swimmer pass application.

Our decision on non-wetsuit applications will be final and no discussion will be entered into following informing you of our decision. Please put down as much detail as you can on this form, as we do not accept further information once it has been submitted.

We understand the attraction of non-wetsuit swimming, but we ask for skins swimmer applications for event safety: If we have a lot of inexperienced non-wetsuit swimmers being pulled out because of cold the safety cover of the rest of the event will be affected. Should we be unable to grant non-wetsuit permission we advise swimmers to be prepared to wear a wetsuit. Alternatively, you will have until 1 week after the skins swimmer application deadline for each event to transfer your place to another swimmer.

I agree to complete a test swim – 1.5 to 2 hours – in open water or unheated lido without a wetsuit prior to the event to make sure I do not experience mild hypothermia and feel comfortable swimming without a wetsuit, and will complete a Test Swim form, signed and dated by a witness, prior to the event (form provided with response to Skins swimmer pass application).
If you are granted a skins swimmer pass would you like your skins swimmer status to be included in the public results list?
Is there any other information you'd like us to know to support your skins swimmer application?
