Open Letter in Solidarity with CUNY Faculty and Staff Demanding a Strike Authorization Vote
We, the undersigned, believe the layoffs of 2,800 adjunct faculty and staff at the City University of New York are unacceptable. Cutting 15% of the faculty means bigger class sizes, less individual instruction, and fewer course offerings leading to delays in graduation.

Decades of cuts have left CUNY underfunded and increasingly reliant upon rising tuition from overstretched students. Instead of defunding the police or taxing wealth, policymakers have chosen to slash the services the people rely on, including CUNY. This will further punish CUNY students who are predominantly working-class students of color and the most affected by the current pandemic. CUNY needs investment, not divestment.

We stand in solidarity with and support the demands of CUNY faculty and staff for a strike authorization vote to reverse these layoffs and to fight for a fully funded and free CUNY. Immediate and drastic collective action is our only hope — for our laid-off colleagues, for our students who will suffer immeasurably as a result of these cuts in courses and services, and for the public university we all believe in. We need every member mobilized for the fight to come!
