Learn for Life, a United Way of Portage County internal program, provides trained volunteers for one-on-one reading tutoring to 2nd and 3rd grade learners who are below grade level reading proficiency.  Classroom teachers choose participating students based on reading assessments completed during the fall of the school year. 

The Learn for Life program offers support to public and private schools throughout Portage County. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour of tutoring each week and will meet with the same students on the same day, at the same time each week, throughout the school year.  If a weekly commitment is not possible, volunteers may opt to become a substitute tutor. Using individualized lesson plans from classroom teachers, volunteers will assist the students' efforts using reading strategies detailed in Learn for Life binders. 

Learn for Life tutors will begin the week of November 6-10, 2023, which coincides with the beginning of the second quarter of the academic calendar. The last week of tutoring for the 2023-2024 school year will be the week of May 6-10, 2024.
