New York lawmakers need to hear from New Yorkers about their experiences taking New York paid medical leave (also known as New York temporary disability insurance or TDI) for their own health needs, and paid family leave (PFL) to bond with a new baby or care for a seriously ill loved one.
Currently, New Yorkers who need to take time off for a serious health condition only have the right to $170/week under temporary disability insurance (TDI). This law does not provide workers with job protection, guarantee of health insurance continuation or intermittent leave.
It does not have to be this way. Senator Ramos and Assembly Member Solages are currently advancing a
bill that would create real paid medical leave for New Yorkers who need to take time off of work to care for themselves during pregnancy, cancer treatment, substance use disorder treatment, mental health treatment, a big surgery, or any other medical emergency. It would allow New Yorkers to receive up to $1,000+ per week (as they are already eligible to do under paid family leave to care for a family member), job protection, and health insurance continuation.
No one should have to sacrifice their health for a paycheck.
But to make this happen, lawmakers need to hear from you! There are many ways to share your story, and A Better Balance appreciates any capacity you have to speak with us. Your stories help push lawmakers. It's time for New Yorkers to have strong paid medical and family leave, and you can help make it happen!
