The Plastic Pledge
Because by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean,
Because plastic is everywhere in the ocean – from the surface to the deepest trenches,
Because the smallest plankton to the largest sea mammals ingest it as part of their diet,
Because plastic attracts toxins in the water, so animals ingest those, too,
Because 80% of ocean plastic comes from land-based sources, and
Because a single-use plastic item might be used for just minutes but will last for hundreds of years…
I pledge to try to change at least one plastic-use behavior for one month.
I will say "no straw" when getting water or other drink.
I will not put fruit or vegetables in a plastic produce bag (try this instead: bring a reusable bag or go bagless!)
I will get a to-go drink without a lid (try this instead: keep a reusable cup with you)
I will leave behind the plastic dry cleaning bags for the dry cleaners to reuse (try this instead: reuse the plastic dry cleaning bags you already have)
I will not use plastic utensils when eating out (try this instead: keep a set in your bag or in the car)
I will keep the same liner in my indoor trash can or go liner-less
I will use a reusable container instead of plastic baggies
I will not buy any fruit or vegetables in plastic packaging
I will pick up five pieces of plastic litter every day
I will not drink water from a water bottle (try this instead: carry around a reusable bottle, like a lightweight aluminum one)
When I buy bulk foods, I will take my own reusable container
