We, the undersigned alumni of the University of Michigan Law School, stand in solidarity with the students participating in the TAHRIR Coalition Popular University for Gaza encampment. We further call for the University of Michigan to immediately divest all $6 billion of endowment funds that are directly and indirectly invested in stakeholders of U.S. military contractors and Israeli companies who are complicit in the murder of Palestinians.

As legal professionals, we are outraged by the international war crimes committed by Israel, including but not limited to: the illegal use of white phosphorus on civilians; the targeting of hospitals and the mass graves of patients and medical staff in Gaza; the relentless bombing of women and children; and the blockade of food, water, and healthcare. Israel’s actions have caused the death of over 30,000 Palestinians and the displacement of over 80% of the population.

We condemn these atrocities, rightly labeled a genocide, as violations of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948 which has been ratified by both the United States and Israel.

As Michigan Law alumni, we are deeply moved by the acts of Michigan students who are standing in solidarity with Palestine. We unequivocally condemn President Ono’s past decision to arrest those engaged in peaceful protest for Palestine. We call upon President Ono and the Board of Regents of this University to protect the civil and constitutional rights of these students, who are speaking out for Palestinian life and freedom.
