2021 Apprentice Matching Application
East End Food Institute’s Apprentice Matching service offers the opportunity to apply to multiple farms and food businesses on Long Island through one application. We connect individuals who are interested in working in sustainable food businesses with those who want to share their expertise. Our mentors include a wide variety of food businesses, including bakers, beverage makers, farmers, fisherman, and more. Each operation offers unique opportunities for hands-on training. Some provide housing and some offer access to additional benefits such as free food.

East End Food Institute connects apprentices with additional educational opportunities through our East End chapter of the Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT). We collaborate with farm members to organize a series of bi-weekly tours and workshops for these apprentices that run from April through October. Tours include a wide variety of farming models unique to the East End, such as vineyards, orchards, fish and shellfish hatcheries, livestock, and more. The CRAFT program also provides apprentices with an opportunity to network and socialize with members of the farming community, the local food movement, and like-minded individuals.

If you are interested in apprenticing at one of our mentor sites, please fill out the application. We will follow up in 1-2 weeks.

Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, Shelter Island NY.
Once a Native American (Manhansett) hunting, fishing and farming ground, Sylvester Manor has since 1651 been home to eleven generations of its original European settler family. Gifted to the Shelter Island community in 2014, the 235-acre historic site is the most intact slaveholding plantation remnant north of Virginia. Sylvester Manor sits on Gardiners Creek and has been transformed to an Enlightenment-era farm, then to a pioneering food industrialist’s estate and today to a nonprofit organic educational farm and vibrant arts and education center with programs open to all. The property includes the original Manor House built in 1735, a timber frame farmstand and a 19th century windmill.

We currently grow 3 acres of mixed vegetables and are fencing an additional 3 acres for 2021, 1 of which we plan to manage using no-till methods. In 2020 we raised 15 pigs on 2 acres of marginal woodlands and hope to expand pig production in 2021. We also have 60 acres of perennial pasture we intend to manage with livestock. We are expanding livestock operations and are considering adding broilers, laying hens, sheep and goats to our systems (to be determined). Our vegetables are distributed through a CSA (community supported agriculture) program and on-site farmstand. The farmstand sells our produce, pork and other locally produced products. Leftover shares from our CSA in 2020 were donated to the Shelter Island Food Pantry and Shelter Island School. Starting in 2021, we will be implementing a sliding-scale CSA membership and providing donated shares for local families in need.

Sylvester Manor's History and Heritage Programming is centered around telling the whole story of all the people who lived here throughout time. We also have farm-based educational programming, music concerts, archaeological digs, fundraising events and other community programming.
