About the GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN Project
The GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN project was first created by Sustainable Woodstock in response to the immediate need for food experienced by many individuals and families as a result of school closings and economic disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sustainable Woodstock is now working long-term with regional food shelves, other area non-profits and the Vermont Food Bank to help families become more self-sufficient by growing their own nutritious and delicious vegetables and herbs. We sincerely hope that those who choose to GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN will find joy, sustenance and fulfillment in the creative act of gardening.

Each complete GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN kit includes a well-rounded variety of seeds and seedlings, an introductory organic gardening book and a complete set of gardening tools: long-handle round-point shovel, 48" garden hoe, garden snips/trimmer,
2-gallon plastic watering can, 5-gallon plastic pail
, hand cultivator (claw type), 54” metal bow rake, 1 pair gardening gloves, 1 hand trowel.

• These gardening kits are designed for those who want to begin gardening in order to supplement their household food supply, and who would not otherwise be able to afford purchasing the tools, seeds and plants required to establish a garden.

• This application is subject to approval. Applications will be processed in the order that they are received. The applicant agrees to use the gardening kit for these purposes.

• The applicant confirms that they are a resident of the towns served by the Windsor Central Supervisory Union (Barnard, Bridgewater, Killington, Pomfret, Plymouth, Reading, Woodstock).

As a way to evaluate how the GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN project is succeeding, recipients are encouraged to let us know how they are progressing with their garden. Stories and photographs of your experiences and the fruits of your gardens are welcome, including feedback on what worked well, and the challenges that you encountered.

(Emailing is encouraged as our staff is small and we can respond to emails in a more timely way, and because we are largely working remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.)

Sustainable Woodstock’s GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN project is funded by a major grant from the Green Mountain Foundation as well as private contributions. The project is also supported by other regional non-profits and the caring and compassionate individuals who are working hard to provide food for all.
