Social Action Student Symposium (SASSy)
The Sonoma State University College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts is pleased to invite student submissions to the Fifth Annual Social Action Student Symposium (SASSy), to be held in-person and on campus on Friday, May 1st, 2026.

We invite submissions of student research that involve themes of social action and justice (broadly understood). Authors can expect presentations to be 10-12 minutes, conducted in a panel format, featuring feedback from a faculty discussant and audience Q&A/dialogue. The event features a catered reception.

SASSy submissions are open to students completing relevant projects during Fall 2025 and/or Spring 2026.
For students completing Spring 2026 courses and projects, the final application deadline is Friday, April 3rd, 2026

We invite submissions from current undergraduate and graduate students. Eligible projects may include, for example:

-An Independent undergraduate or graduate (MA) project where data collection is in-progress or completed
-A Senior seminar or capstone course project or paper
-A well-developed term paper or presentation from an upper-division elective course
-A collaborative research project or one conducted with a faculty member (a student must be first author/presenter)
-Presentations delivered (or in preparation for delivery) in another forum, such as an academic conference

Topics, methods, disciplinary perspectives, time period, scope of study, and target audiences for the work are open. We especially encourage studies on topics including (but not limited to): environmental justice, reproductive justice, economic inequality, prejudice and discrimination, inequality in criminal justice systems, wealth and poverty, critical perspectives on education, and issues of racism, sexism, ability/disability, and intersectional forms of social stratification and oppression. Studies of social movements, policy, political mobilization, human rights, conflict, community-building, or efforts to overcome injustices or address social problems through action are also encouraged.

To apply, please complete all required fields of the application below. A faculty reference (mentor, advisor, instructor or a faculty member who is most familiar with you or your work) is required. (A project description or abstract of 150-250 words is required.)

Spring applicants will be notified by April 17 regarding inclusion in the final SASSy program. Although SASSy is non-competitive, submissions are reviewed for alignment with the SASSy mission.

Please note that if you submit an application, it is understood that you intend to attend the event. Please do not submit an application if you will be unable to develop a final presentation and deliver your presentation in-person on Friday May 1st, 2026.
