MEMS Instrumental Music Program Registration
Dear instrumental student or parent/ guardian:

Throughout the upcoming school year, your child will have the opportunity to participate in many after-school performance programs. We had over 150 students within the band and orchestra programs this past school year and are excited for September! This letter will explain the important details of the instrumental music program here at MEMS.

Instrumental music lessons are offered to all seventh and eighth grade students. Your child will receive a small group lesson once per week. In order to maximize educational time, lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis to ensure that your child will not miss any subject more than once per month. These lessons are offered at no charge. Please do not worry about missing school work; lessons are 40 minutes long while most academic classes are an hour or more, and with the rotating schedule, students miss each class every 6-7 weeks. Participation in a lesson also includes a mandatory weekly band or orchestra rehearsal period.

Please note that although band and orchestra do meet after school, it is possible to participate in the many sports/clubs offered here at MEMS. Both Mrs. Silipino and Mrs. Blick work closely with the activities supervisors and sports coaches to ensure that students may participate in both activities. When making your decision about whether or not to participate in band/ orchestra, please do not let the sports or after school activities deter you. Most of our students are involved in after school sports or clubs and still participate in the ensembles.

At this time, MEMS does not offer lessons on piano or guitar. Please be advised that due to the large number of students needing lessons, we cannot always accommodate for beginners but will do our best to schedule these lessons. Lessons are offered on the following instruments:
String Bass
Bells/ Xylophone
Bass Clarinet
Alto Saxophone
Tenor Saxophone
Baritone Saxophone
French Horn
Baritone Horn

o Orchestra will be held after-school, Thursdays, from 2:00-3:00pm with Mrs. Blick.
o Eighth Grade Band will be after-school, Tuesdays, from 2:00-3:00 with Mrs. Silipino
o Seventh Grade Band will be after-school, Mondays, from 2:00-3:00 with Mrs. Silipino
o All Select Ensembles will be after-school, once a week, time/day to be announced.
o The select ensembles are by audition only. Audition materials may be obtained at the beginning of the school year, no sooner. You must be an active member with the band or orchestra to participate within the select ensemble programs.

If needed, instrumental rentals can be arranged through Music and Arts, Inc. located in the Galleria Shopping Center on route 9N in Manalapan. Please contact your music director through email for more information on rentals or go to

A limited number of school owned instruments may be available for students to play free of charge and are distributed on a needs and first come first serve basis. Presently available: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, Baritone Horn, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trombone, and Tuba. All advanced students who are using school instruments are expected to participate in Orchestra or Band. Please be advised that there is a VERY limited number of school instruments available and that most students will have to rent an instrument if they don’t already own one.
