Miami Sudbury School’s Staff Member: Community & Systems Coordinator

If your dream job involves lesson plans, grades, and teachable moments…

If you see children as projects to be perfected…

If you live for that “aha” moment when a student finally understands what you explained—

Then this job is NOT for you.

But,

If you trust that humans, of every age, have an inborn drive to learn, grow, and belong...

If you respect children’s autonomy and curiosity as much as your own...

If you enjoy being part of a democratic, multigenerational community...

Then maybe this job IS for you.

About Miami Sudbury School

The Miami Sudbury School is a K-12 democracy where young people have human and civil rights.

We give the time and space for young people to learn who they are, what they like, and how to achieve their goals while working authentically within a mixed-age community based on respect, responsibility, and self-direction.

Students and staff together run the school — its business, its facilities, and its culture.

Staff members are not teachers in the traditional sense; they are co-workers, role models, facilitators, and citizens in a small, vibrant democracy.

What You’ll Do

Your work will span both worlds: the philosophical and the practical.

Working IN the School (Community Life)

  • Be visibly present and available for students and other staff.

  • Model patience, responsibility, respect, and authentic interest in young people — without directing them.

  • Step in calmly for matters of safety, fairness, and community well-being.

  • Encourage self-direction and personal decision-making.

  • Participate in School Meetings and Restorative Justice Committee processes.

  • Support students in learning how to manage the school themselves.

  • Serve as a “point person” for a small cohort of students, noting interests, needs, and growth.

  • Maintain notes in staff logs and contribute in weekly staff meetings.

  • Keep the school welcoming and presentable for tours and events.

  • Uphold our community’s democratic values and protect consensus-based decision making.

Working ON the School (Operations & Systems)

  • Manage attendance, records, and compliance with the State of Florida.

  • Maintain student records, immunizations, emergency info, and enrollment documents.

  • Process tuition, invoices, payroll, and expenses (QuickBooks).

  • Monitor and balance budgets; coordinate with the accountant.

  • Oversee licensing, permits, insurance, and state safety requirements.

  • Communicate with families — from admissions to daily updates.

  • Help with marketing and communications: website updates, social media, newsletters, event promotion.

  • Plan and host open houses, family meetings, and school celebrations.

  • Maintain building and grounds safety, manage supplies, and coordinate vendors.

  • Support staff development, volunteer onboarding, and fingerprinting.

  •  Assist with grant writing, donor relations, and fundraising.

You won’t do all of this alone. Tasks are shared and rotated among staff according to skills and interests. But you must be comfortable wearing many hats — from sweeping the floor to reconciling spreadsheets.

Who You Are

  • Dependable, self-directed, and safety-minded.

  • Emotionally steady and unflappable around both children and adults.

  • Comfortable balancing structure and flexibility.

  • Organized and detail-oriented — but not rigid.

  • Able to handle administrative work with care and clarity.

  • Passionate about something real — whether it’s coding, painting, gardening, music, carpentry, storytelling, or activism — and excited to share it authentically.

  • A lifelong learner, genuinely interested in people and ideas.

  • Someone who sees responsibility not as control, but as community care.

Useful Skills (Not Requirements)

Bookkeeping • Facilities maintenance • PR and communications • Writing and editing • Videography or photography • Graphic design • IT troubleshooting • Event planning • Volunteer management • Active listening and conflict resolution • Fundraising or community outreach
