Maine National Education for Women (NEW) Leadership Institute, sponsored by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine, addresses the under representation of women in politics by empowering and encouraging undergraduate college students to take on leadership roles and become politically active.
The Maine NEW Leadership Summer Institute is an intensive six-day residential program, which will take place
May 30- June 4, 2024. Participants will meet leaders that are active in local, state and national issues; attend leadership sessions, learn about Maine politics, visit the Maine State Legislature, and participate in panel discussions, workshops, and hands-on projects. After the Institute, participants are encouraged to continue to develop public leadership skills and will be invited to return for special events, workshops, and programs.
Cost:Special thanks to the generosity of our donors, there is no cost to students. Students are, however, responsible for their own transportation to and from the Institute.
Eligibility:Maine NEW Leadership is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any Maine college or university and Maine residents enrolled in out-of-state schools. Students must be at least in their first year of college when they apply. Students who will be graduating in the spring are eligible. Maine NEW Leadership is committed to having a diverse group of participants in each class. Traditional and non-traditional college students from all backgrounds are enthusiastically encouraged to apply.
Commitment:Maine NEW Leadership participants are expected to attend all Summer Institute sessions and stay in the housing provided by the program,
May 30 to June 4, 2024. In completing this application, you acknowledge that you are aware of these requirements and agree, if accepted, to meet this commitment.
