FKCE Registration: Parentification: Understanding Hyper-Independence in Foster Care | Monday, February 9, 2026 | 6-8:30pm via Zoom
If you have trouble filling out this registration form, please reach out to vcfostercare@vcccd.edu for assistance.

Many children in foster care have learned to survive by relying only on themselves. Hyper-independence and parentification often develop when youth grow up without consistent emotional safety, taking on adult responsibilities or believing that needing help is a weakness. While these behaviors may have once been protective, they can later interfere with relationships, healing, and a successful transition to adulthood.

This training helps foster and resource parents understand how trauma shapes a child’s need for control, self-reliance, and emotional guardedness. Participants will explore the roots of hyper-independence and parentification, including neglect, role reversal, attachment disruptions, and family stressors such as illness, substance use, or financial hardship. We’ll discuss how these patterns show up in everyday life—difficulty asking for help, mistrust of caregivers, over-responsibility, burnout, and resistance to services.

Caregivers will learn practical, relationship-based strategies to gently rebuild trust and interdependence—without taking away a child’s sense of strength. The class highlights how connection, consistency, and modeling healthy reliance can replace survival habits with resilience, preparing youth for healthy relationships and independent living.

This training is reccommended for caregivers of children as young as two or three years old and up.

The training fulfils:  Section 8-01 (e)(1) Trauma informed care and attachment (4) Behavior management of the Written Directives for Resource Parents. Certificates will be provided to those that complete the class and registration materials.
