Background
Failures of the Special education system were exposed in a Houston Chronicle series: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/denied/

The Board of HISD took action and formed an ad hoc committee.

SPECIAL EDUCATION AD HOC COMMITTEE
Description: The purpose of the Special Education Ad Hoc Committee is to

● Assess the District's current special education program;
● Review the findings of the Houston Chronicle's recent investigative series on special education as they concern the District;
● Identify strengths and areas for improvement for the District with regards to special education;
● Improve two-way communication between the District and other stakeholders, in particular parents, with regards to special education;
● Report back to the full Board with recommendations

The special education ad hoc committee met since early 2017. The committee's intent was to inform and to educate the elected Trustees.

The trustees plan to dissolve the committee on Thursday.

As a committee member, I seek your opinion? Do we need the Trustees to continue their work on special education?

Should HISD Trustees Maintain an Ongoing and DIRECT Involvement in Special Education? *
HISD Board of Education maintains several established citizen advisory committees. Should the Trustees establish a "Special Education Committee" to advise the Board of Education directly?
