Auckland College Climbing Series              Top rope belayer policies

We request that you read the following information and complete the questions on the form so that Auckland Sport Climbing Club can get as much information as possible to ensure a smooth running of our top rope events and we can target communications appropriately.

Many thanks from the Auckland Sport Climbing Club team that arranges the Auckland College Climbing Series events.

Without belayers we cannot hold the events, the more belayers we have, the more climbs we can have in the event.  eg 15 belayers = 15 climbs = long queues for 120 climbers

Our expectation is that every climber supplies a top rope belayer, or gets an exemption from us.

In schools where there are 2 or more students a ratio applies see below.

We expect belayers to belay only 60 mins but obviously the more belayers we have available the more we can spread out the load.

If you have never belayed before, don't worry, learning is easy! Gyms provide free courses, see below.

For all options we need to be advised of the belayer name and email prior, or exemption applied for 10 days prior email to accseries1@gmail.com

Extreme Edge: 6 April

  • Extreme Edge's belayer policy is that everyone belaying needs to have passed their Belaying Course AND have belayed at Extreme Edge within the last 3 months.
  • If you have never belayed at EE or are a complete beginner, there is a free 30-minute Full Belaying Course offered hourly at EE. No booking is required but you'll have to bring a climber with you. This course cannot be completed on event day and it must be done beforehand.
  • If you have already been signed off to belay at EE but haven't belayed in the last 3 months, a free Short Form Assessment is also offered at EE. No booking is required but you'll have to bring a climber with you. If you can, please complete this assessment before the competition, a limited number of assessments will also be available on the competition day but they will be prioritized for those with significant constraints (e.g distance). If you fail this assessment, you will have to complete the full course in the future!
  • Senior students 16 years & older that are signed off at EE can belay the junior round (first round) on the day.

Vertical Adventures: 15 June

  • Vertical Adventures' belayer policy is that everyone belaying needs to have passed a Belaying Course (at VA or EE) AND have belayed at VA within the last 6 months.
  • If you have never belayed before, a free 30-minute Full Belaying Course is offered hourly at VA. No booking is required but you'll have to bring a climber with you. This course cannot be completed on competition day and it must be done beforehand.
  • If you have been signed off at another gym but haven't belayed at Vertical Adventures in the last 6 months, you can do a Quick Assessment on the event morning. Please indicate it in this survey.
  • To be eligible for an on-the-morning assessment you must have top rope belayed previously at another gym as a minimum.
  • If you fail this assessment though you will not be able to participate in the event so we advise a full assessment from the gym prior to the event.

Belayer / Competitor Ratios:

  • For schools entering more than 1 student, a ratio of 1 belayer per 2 climbers applies.
  • For larger schools (12+ climbers), a 1 to 3 ratio applies.
Please Ring the gym to check if you are signed off there for top rope belaying if you are unsure.

Never top rope belayed before: To get signed off for the first time contact the gym to make a time with your climber. A lesson takes approximately 30 mins. This cannot be done on the day.  We would prefer belayers with some experience outside of just having passed a lesson so if you are in this position please try and do at least two or three sessions with a climber prior to participating in one of the ACCS events.
