Support MA Prisoners: Oppose the Accreditation of North Central Correctional Institution (NCCI)- Gardner!
Deeper Than Water has received word that NCCI-Gardner is seeking accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections and the American Correctional Association. The CAC will conduct a standards compliance audit at Gardner on April 3-5, 2019. the CAC is accepting information from the public regarding the audit. A memo recently posted at the prison states that information must be received at least 10 business days prior to the audit. We are calling on all supporters of Deeper Than Water and our allies in the struggle for abolition to sign on to this letter opposing NCCI-Gardner's accreditation by the CAC.

It has come to our attention that NCCI-Gardner has applied for accreditation by your organization. We, the undersigned, write to request that you deny accreditation to NCCI-Gardner. In recent years, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has found NCCI-Gardner to be in violation of regulations pertaining to prisoners' health and safety. In an inspection letter dated February 25, 2019 (a copy of which is enclosed with this letter), 257 repeat violations were found at the facility, including inadequate floor space in all cells in the East, North, and South Wings, and the 3rd Floor of Thompson Hall. Prisoners' descriptions of overcrowding are also corroborated by the report, which notes that at the time of inspection, 970 prisoners were being held at NCCI-Gardner (capacity 633 prisoners). It is clear from publicly available documents that the number of violations noted at NCCI-Gardner continue to rise and that the issuance of violations by the DPH is not a sufficient incentive for the Department of Corrections to address these problems. For these reasons, we urge you to deny accreditation to NCCI-Gardner.
