Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
I am so pleased to announce year FOUR of Clow's Young Composers Club! This is the first composing club in the District 204 elementary schools that utilizes a high-caliber online composing website to facilitate student composing. The club is involves face-to-face interaction and online interaction, truly activating essential 21st century skills! Student-teacher and student-student interaction will be used through Noteflight to encourage peer review and teacher feedback on their work. Members in the club will also be paired with a Neuqua Valley AP Music Theory student who will mentor your child through Noteflight (with teacher supervision).
In the Young Composers Club, your child will gain experience applying musical concepts they’ve learned in class through the expressive form of composition. They will be getting in-depth training on how to use the composition program Noteflight to generate and develop new musical ideas (this will transfer well to other notation software like Sibelius or Finale if they take Intro to Music Theory or AP Music Theory in high school). Here are my goals for this club.
Students will:

Learn how to notate and format music in Noteflight
•
Develop a musical idea into a complete composition using instruments and Noteflight
•
Collaborate with a Neuqua Valley AP Music Theory mentor through Noteflight to develop their composition
•
Learn how to express themselves through the use of melody, harmony, form, dynamics, and instrument textures
•
Have the amazing privilege of having their completed work performed by some of District 204's top musicians
from the NVHS orchestra, band, and choral program in April. Hear and see some of last year's compositions:

NEW: Students also have the option of entering another composition into a recital hosted by the Dupage Symphony Orchestra later this spring!
We will meet on select Mondays from 8:00-8:50 am starting next Monday, September 30. See the dates below.

Please complete the online sign-up below. This should be done no later than Wednesday, September 25. You’ll receive an email confirmation by Friday 9/27 to confirm your child’s enrollment. Then, we start the following week! Enter door #9 no earlier than 7:50 AM and head to the music room!
Due to the collaborative nature of this group, there may be dates that need to be altered to work with NVHS. I will do my very best to keep communication top notch so that this is a great experience for all! Thanks for helping me AWAKE your child’s inner musician—the possibilities are ENDLESS for them!
