An emergency statement opposing war on Venezuela has been launched. Backed by MPs, trade union leaders, cultural figures and peace campaigners from across in Britain, it states:
"We reject this military escalation and call on all who stand for peace to say clearly: No to Trump’s war on Venezuela."
The statement has already been endorsed by over 40 Parliamentarians including MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Richard Burgon, Diane Abbott, Zarah Sultana, John McDonnell, Sian Berry and Liz Saville Roberts; nine trade union general secretaries including Daniel Kebede (NEU), Fran Heathcote (PCS), Jo Grady (UCU), Eddie Dempsey (RMT), Steve Wright (FBU), Steve Gillian (POA), Maryam Eslamdoust (TSSA), Sarah Woolley (BFAWU) and Gawain Little (GFTU); writers Tariq Ali and Victoria Brittain Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja; and Britain’s leading anti-war organisations, CND and the Stop the War Coalition.
Initiated by the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in the build up to the war, the statement has been backed by over 4,000 individuals and a wide range of organisations standing in solidarity with Latin America, including Cuba Solidarity Campaign, Justice for Colombia, Labour Friends of Latin America, Brazil Solidarity Initiative, Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign Action Group, Caribbean Labour Solidarity, and the Peace and Justice Project.
