India: The world’s largest strike, COVID crisis, Hindu nationalism, human rights, and geopolitics. A talk by Sharat G. Lin
The Monterey Peace & Justice Center invites you to join us for this free, in-person event at the Monterey Peace and Justice Center in Seaside, CA.
In 2020-2021, an estimated quarter-million Indians waged strikes across India to protest agricultural reforms which farmers say will leave them at the mercy of big corporations. Dr. Sharat G. Lin will present his analysis of this massive popular upsurge, its historical underpinnings, and its potential to transform the political landscape of India.
As a contextual backdrop to the farmer's protests, he will discuss the current COVID pandemic surge, the effects of India's neo-liberal transition, its authoritarian laws and stacking the courts, human rights violations in Kashmir, the decline of the traditional left, political change from the Congress Party to the BJP, and the rise of proto-fascism.
Dr. Lin is affiliated with Human Agenda and the Initiative for Equality. He writes and lectures on global political economy, labor migration, social movements, and public health. He has been on the front lines of some epic moments in history, such the aftermath of the Naxalbari movement in India, the Cultural Revolution in China, Palestinian West Bank and Gaza during the early years of occupation, and Egypt during the Arab Spring uprising in 2011-2012.
Registration is FREE and open to the public. The event can also be viewed on MPJC's YouTube Channel:
