The following is a petition urging the ESF and Syracuse University administration to take concrete steps to protect its students from mass deportation by becoming a 'sanctuary school' and refusing to allow ICE officers from entering its campuses. Similar policies are being reviewed at Brown University, Yale University, Wesleyan University, Trinity College, and Northwestern University at the urging of students.

Dear Chancellor Syverud, President Wheeler, and the associated Administration,
We, students, alumni, faculty, staff and affiliates of Syracuse University and ESF, recognize the necessity to feel accepted, safe, and protected as part of the Syracuse community. In a recent email to our community Chancellor Syverud stated, "Syracuse University is built upon a deep sense of an inclusive community... a promise to include all voices, to listen to all viewpoints, and to embrace all members irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship, disability, veteran-military status and political views."
The president-elect and his cabinet promise to immediately deport millions of immigrants and abolish the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program that provides relief from deportation for long-settled youth in the United States. These policies will break up families, devastate our Syracuse community, and have lasting consequences on the civic vitality of our city.
How can we include all voices if undocumented voices are threatened?
In response to the recent presidential election, we strongly urge the university to take action in order to protect the members of our community who are likely to be affected by the president-elect’s proposed anti-immigrant policy. Specifically, we ask that SU/ESF Administration take the following actions:
· Refuse to comply with immigration authorities regarding deportations or raids. Making our shared university a sanctuary is a concrete action that we can take to support and protect our students who are living in fear and uncertainty.
· Guarantee privacy by refusing to release information regarding the immigration status of our students, staff and community members.
· Refuse to use e-verify.
· Assign an administrative office with the responsibility for counseling DACA students on their educational situation. Advertise that DACA student counseling services are available on a strictly confidential basis.
· In the event of arrest, imprisonment, and deportation, or due to student reluctance to travel to or appear on campus, have in place arrangements for online continuation of their degree programs.
· Take these measures during the current semester (in other words, immediately) so that DACA students can be assured of institutional support towards continuing in school next semester, retention, and completion of their degree programs.
· Invest in faculty and staff training to support undocumented students.
For your reference, here are two internal 2011 memos indicate that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are subject to certain restrictions upon entering college campuses, and should avoid persecuting high school and college students.

We demand that the University stand in solidarity with those members of its community who face the imminent threat of violence, deportation, and family separation.
