    Clarification of Internship Skills Sought and Developed

    Besides industry-specific knowledge, employers typically indicate the skill sets they seek in entry-level hires are leadership, teamwork, written communication, verbal communication, work ethic, and digital proficiency. See explanation below and then answer the following questions. LEADERSHIP: (1) Inspires vision and innovation; (2) shows strategic initiative to develop and execute on ideas; (3) influences and motivates others to accomplish goals; (4) perseveres under pressure and drives toward obtaining desired results; (5) adapts and leverages change toward positive outcomes; (6) makes sound decisions that support the organization. TEAMWORK: (1) Builds good rapport with team members; (2) tolerates diversity and works to resolve conflict with team members; (3) actively identifies and evaluates problems and suggests solutions; (4) encourages participation among all team members; (5) contributes toward timely achievement of milestones. VERBAL COMMUNICATION: (1) Listens intently, objectively, and completely to other speakers, and is able to reflect back to the speaker what was heard to build rapport; (2) conveys ideas organized and logically to make the content cohesive and understandable to the listener; (3) chooses appropriate words and adjusts to the listener's level of understanding of the language and subject matter; (4) includes references to support points, such as analogies, metaphors, case studies, audio-visual aids, etc; (5) delivery is expressive, enunciated, and demonstrates effective non-verbal gestures and eye contact in a polished and confident manner to make the presentation compelling. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: (1) Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the context, audience, and purpose for written content; (2) develops relevant and compelling content targeted to defined scope and purpose; (3) follows vocabulary, grammar, formatting, and stylistic conventions specific to disciplines and/or writing tasks; (4) researches information efficiently and effectively and demonstrates skillful use of credible, relevant sources to develop content; (5) uses language skillfully to communicate meaning to readers with clarity, concision, and accuracy. DIGITAL PROFICIENCY: (1) Ability to build communities using content marketing across social media, websites, and email campaigns, while maintaining a smart social presence; (2) ability to create and format electronic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations; (3) ability to collaborate on an organization’s digitized platforms utilizing project management tools, electronic calendars, task lists, and gantt charts to rank tasks, manage time, and minimize distractions; (4) use email communication efficiently and demonstrate of digital etiquette; (5) ability to navigate across several devices and platforms (including smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearable devices, PC, and Mac); (5) demonstrates security and privacy awareness to avoid data and security breaches WORK ETHIC: (1) Shows up on time and is prepared for work mentally and emotionally, equipped with necessary equipment and resources; (2) assumes responsibility for personal actions and decisions and works toward a high standard of performance with concern of the quality of personal work; (3) demonstrates self-initiative and follow through with setting and efficiently achieving short and long term goals, with a willingness to go beyond what is required when needed; (4) manages personal reactions and navigates difficult individuals or situations with a calm and non-defensive manner, and keeps personal matters from interfering with maintaining top performance; (5) maintains a positive mindset and quickly reframes challenging situations to positively influence conditions, realizing that attitude affects performance and group dynamics.
