Invitation
You are invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. This Participant Information Sheet tells you about the purpose, risks and benefits of this research study. If you agree to take part, we will ask you to sign a Consent Form. If there is anything that you are not clear about, we will be happy to explain it to you. Please take as much time as you need to read this information. You should only consent to participate in this research study when you feel you understand what is being asked of you, and you have had enough time to think about your decision. Purpose of the Study
This study is concerned with the influence of types of messages received on physical activity in college students over a three week period.You have been invited to participate in this study which investigates the influence of feelings and thoughts using messages on physical activity levels in college students. There will be approximately 120 students participating in this study, all of whom have been contacted through the SONA system or by email.
Taking Part – What it Involves
Participation in this study requires participants to use two free Smartphone apps over a 3 week period. Firstly, a pedometer app (ACCUPEDO) to log your daily total steps and secondly, a free message app (VIBER) in which you will receive daily messages for seven days from the researcher.
Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. A decision to withdraw at any time, or a decision not to take part, will not affect your rights in any way.
What will happen to me if I take part?
You will be asked to download two FREE apps to your phone: Accupedo (pedometer app) and Viber (messaging app).Your responsibilities include recording your daily step count over 3 weeks using Accupedo and reading the messages sent to you through Viber in week 2. At the end of each week you will complete a short online questionnaire and send your step count data via email to the researcher. At the end of week 3 you will be debriefed on the study.
How long will my part in the study last?
The study will last 3 weeks. Participants will receive approximately 7 short messages through Viber (messaging app) during week 2.
What are the possible benefits in taking part?
Participation in this study may increase your understanding of your personal physical activity motivations and intentions and the effects of types of messages on physical activity outcomes.
What happens at the end of the study?
When all participants have been tested (this should be within 6-8 months of your participation), you will receive a summary of one or 2 pages of the main findings. While it could be up to 2 years before final results are published, we would be pleased to include you on an address list to receive publications arising from the study. Only general findings will be reported, without reference to identifiable individual results.
What happens if I change my mind during the study?
You are entitled to change your mind about participating in this at any time without disadvantage or penalty.
