dB-SERC lunch workshop - How people learn: A Scientist's Perspective
When: Friday, October 14 from 12 - 1:30 pm
Where: 321 Allen Hall

Dr. Jose Mestre from the Departments of Physics and Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will conduct the workshop. We encourage you to attend even if you can only attend the workshop for the first hour. The abstract is shown below:

How People Learn: A Scientist’s Perspective
An overview of human learning and problem solving in science will be presented, including the role that misconceptions play in learning as well as why it is so difficult to get learners to transfer learning acquired in one context to related contexts. These ideas will be illustrated by an activity that will engage the audience in applying learning principles to a simple physics situation. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how the activity ties to the learning principles covered in the first half of the presentation, and implications for promoting better teaching and learning in science/engineering courses will be discussed.
