WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO LOSE A
CHILD TO GET TRAFFIC CALMING IN GREATER HAZELWOOD!!
PLEASE HELP US BY SIGNING THIS
PETITION TO GET TRAFFIC CALMING IMPLEMENTED IN THE GREATER HAZELWOOD COMMUNITY
ASAP.
On Tuesday, July 26, we lost six-year-old Jamel Austin, a bright young youth of our community,
who was struck by a driver while riding his bike in front of his home in Glen
Hazel. This is after multiple conversations and emails with City
officials about our community's concerns about street safety around the Glen
Hazel projects, Propel School, and the Spray Park. We have talked to them about
moving funds from the Mon-Oakland Connector to get signage, speed bumps,
flashing signs, and whatever else is needed to ensure our children's safety.
Yet all we have gotten is broken promises.
Now a child's life has
been lost because of their negligence.
We, the undersigned
residents of the Greater Hazelwood Community and others from around the City
hereby petition the City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh City Council, Pittsburgh
City Planning, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and the Mayor of the City of
Pittsburgh to support Traffic Calming in the Greater Hazelwood Community.
We demand traffic
calming along:
- 500 block to 900 block of Johnston Ave
- 300 block of Mansion St.
- 5400 block of Glenwood Ave
On these
blocks you can find Propel School, Cobra Youth Development Programs (Cobra
Youth Football and Cheerleading Program, Cobra Afterschool Program, and the
Cobra Summer Camp), a church, and a subsidized housing project (housing for
single parents who have 1 or more children). There are also 3 playgrounds, 3
hoop courts, tennis courts, a spray park, a football length public field and a
baseball field – all of which make these streets central gathering places for
our kids and critical locations for traffic calming. In addition to these
locations, we need traffic calming on Second Ave. and hazelwood Ave. where so
many of our kids get on and off the bus for school.
