We are offering a year-round Online STEAM and Robotics Academy to interested Kinder through 8th grade students. All students are always welcome!
STEAMBotics Academy will be held as follows:
Year-round weekly meeting sessions.
Weekly calendar to be shared via Google Calendar tool for academy members.
Class sessions are 1, 1.5, 2 hours each week depending on the class.
Sessions are $30 per hour and held weekly.
Students should be in 1st to 8th grade.
We offer classes using Zoom. Other options available by request based on demand.
Classes and meetings are subject to change to meet the needs of the students.

CLASS INFORMATION
Our classes are self-paced and project based so students can begin at any time. Classes are designed for the needs of the student after a brief interview with student and parent. Consider this private robotics coaching fulfilling the STEAM learning goals of your child's future.
Materials
At this time, we have limited materials available for rent. Kits are not shared to protect student safety. You will need to provide your own computer and purchase the recommended kit from LEGO Education. We will give you ordering information. If you are in a financial hardship, please email us offline to give us an opportunity to work with you. Limited scholarships available.
For all classes:

Students work AT HOME using a robotics kit and Windows 10 laptop or MAC computer.
•
Cost includes online lessons, instructions, coaching.
•
Materials fees apply as listed. Cost does not include storage, tax, shipping, handling, delivery.
•
All materials purchased from LEGO Education remain the property of the student.
•
All materials rented from Carrender Robotics will be charged an additional fee and remain the property of Carrender Robotics.
•
Students will need a laptop with internet capability and USB port, notebook, pencil, household supplies.
•
Students will participate in age appropriate lessons as they progress through learning activities.
•
Class is held once a week. This can be modified per request based on the needs of the class.
•
Most of our classes will be separated into two grade increments. For example: K-1, 2-3, 4-5, etc.
•
Parents will be invited to view various game activities and support students as needed.
•
We will use Zoom with password protection and waiting room for student safety.
•
Normal school rules apply. So good behavior expected. Use restroom before logging on or joining class.
•
Students are expected to cooperate and share well.
•
New and continuing lessons each class.
•
Students are registered on a first come, first served basis.
•
Prefer prepayment via PayPal or Zelle.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
LEGO Fun with Simple Machines
Pre-Robotics 6 - 9 yrs., grades 1-2, 3-4
Kit cost $90, Class time 1 hour
Our class uses the Early Simple Machines and Simple Machines sets and activity pack and is an excellent way to introduce budding builders to key simple machines concepts while building teamwork and communication skills. Elementary students will discover basic physical science models such as gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels and axles through observation, prediction, reasoning, and critical thinking for the younger child. No programming is required.
Science with WeDo 2 Robotics Build and Program 1 & 2
Beginner Level 1, 7 - 10 yrs., grades 2-3, 4-5
Kit cost $215, Class time 1.5 hours
Our class uses the WeDo sets and activity pack and will introduce young builders to building and programming concepts while building teamwork and communication skills. Science activities are divided into themes and engaging experiments. This class is an excellent bridge from Simple Machines to the Robotics program. Students will get their first LEGO programming experience.
LEGO Robotics Exploration
Beginner Level 1, 8 - 12 yrs., grades 3 - 6
Kit cost $215, Class time 1 hour
This fun and exciting class is ideal for beginners. Students will be building and programming robots using a LEGO® WeDo 2.0™ kits. Using LEGO blocks, gears, motors and sensors, students will learn the basics of mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. Students will have an opportunity to try different LEGO building models. This class is excellent for students who have limited experience as it allows them an opportunity to explore and experiment with new concepts. while preparing them for more advanced topics.
LEGO® Robotics with SPIKE Prime® - NEW
Beginner – Intermediate Level 1-2, 10 - 14 yrs., grades 4 - 7
Kit cost $330, Class time 2 hours
Using the newest technology available from LEGO® Education, students will gain hands-on-experience with LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime the go-to STEAM learning tool for students. Combining colorful, new LEGO building elements, easy-to-use hardware and intuitive drag-and drop coding software based on Scratch, SPIKE Prime will engage students through playful learning to think critically and solve complex problems, regardless of their learning level. Beginning with easy-entry projects moving through the creative design process, this class will teach students the essential 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow all while having fun.
LEGO Computer Robotics and Coding: EV3 Mindstorms™
Advanced Level 3, 9 - 16 yrs., grades 4 - 8
Kit cost $440 - $560, Class time 2 hours
This STEAM based class is an advanced class using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ EV3 Robotics System for students who want to expand their programming skills to the next stage using LEGO® Education Mindstorms EV3 kits with Programming and Data-logging software. Students will construct their robot designs using sensors, motors and LEGO® Technic building elements to complete game challenges and coding experiments. Prior experience in robotics is recommended but not required.
SCRATCH Game Design
Beginner to Advanced Levels, 8 - 14 yrs., grades 2 - 6
No materials fee, Class time 1.5 hours
This STEAM class is an introduction to Game Design using Scratch 3 software to teach students about real-world game design concepts in a fun and exciting way. Put your artistic skills to work designing your own online game. The students will create an account and can download and play their games at home and with their friends. This course provides a hands-on, problem-solving approach to learning programming and related concepts in computer science. This class is intended for students that are interested in coding classes and game design.
SCRATCH Game Design with WeDo 2
Beginner to Advanced Levels, 8 - 14 yrs., grades 2 - 6
Kit cost $215, Class time 2 hours
This STEAM class is an introduction to Game Design using Scratch 3 software and the LEGO® WeDo 2.0 set to teach students about real-world game design concepts in a fun and exciting way. This course provides a hands-on building and problem-solving approach to learning programming concepts. This class is intended for students that are interested in coding classes and game design.
LEGO® Robotics Engineering with Scratch Game Coding
Intermediate to Advanced Levels, 10 - 14 yrs., grades 4 - 8
Kit cost $440 - $560, Class time 2 hours
This exciting course is designed for students who want to continue their programming skills to the next level focusing on Game Design and Engineering principles using EV3 and Scratch Game Coding. In this STEAM class students will use the LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 kit with Scratch Programming and EV3 software to design, build and program their own robot creations and game challenges. Students will have fun while they develop creative thinking and problem-solving knowledge. Working in teams, students will construct their robot game designs and will use EV3 and Scratch programming with the EV3 intelligent brick, servo motors and sensors to create interactive games. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions.
VEX IQ Robotics and Coding
Intermediate to Advanced Levels, 10 - 14 yrs., grades 4 – 8
Kit cost $380, Class time 2 hours
It’s Your Future – Learn about STEAM, engineering, and robotics with the expanded VEX IQ kit, the Controller, and the Robot Brain. Take the next step in your robotics experience and increase your skills building and programming robots using the VEX IQ Robotics System. Students will learn programming skills and engineering design with the VEX IQ system using MOD Kit software, motors, touch, color, bump, distance sensors and tools. Students will have fun building, designing and coding a variety of VEX IQ robots from kits provided to complete weekly game challenges. Students will gain confidence while learning teamwork skills, developing critical thinking and exploring this advanced robotic system. This class is excellent preparation for students interested in VEX IQ Tournaments.
STEAM Camp - Week Long Camp to be held during school breaks
Beginner Level 1, 8 - 12 yrs., grades 3 - 6
Kit cost n/a, Class time 2 hours
Students in this beginner class will enjoy STEAM Camp for School Breaks. Our class is held daily for five days.

Instructor
Eva Carrender is a certified LEGO Academy Trainer and VEX IQ Event Partner who has been teaching and coaching robotics for over 20 years. Eva teaches robotics at charter school and after-school enrichment programs in the South Bay and online. She has a knack for making difficult topics understandable. She’s a LEGO Mindstorms expert who trains other teachers about STEAM and is passionate about inspiring children to succeed.
Coaching
We are available for coaching for private sessions and robotics tournaments. All requests must be booked in advance and we have limited availability. Minimum team size is 6, maximum is 10. Team interview required. Call or email for a quote.
Announcing, Judging, Referees for Robotics competitions
We love supporting our community and offer volunteers for announcing, judging and refereeing at local LEGO and VEX competitions. Occasionally we can use or offer high school students community service hours for volunteering at our events. Email us for specifics.
Payment can be made by PayPal and is due and payable by the first day of academy meeting and first of each month. Please add a note on the memo line with your child’s name and the month you are signing up for. An email confirmation will be sent to you after payment has been received. All fees are non-refundable once class has begun.
