In February 1844 the waters of the Eastern Cleddau river broke through into the Garden Pit coal mine near Landshipping Quay, just 12 miles North West of Amroth. Part of the mine ran below the estuary and caused it to flood within minutes. The majority of the casualties were boys and the youngest miner, Joseph Harts, was just four. How many lives were lost in this mining disaster?
