We hope to provide around 5 bat exclusions per year, mostly in the early weeks of May or mid to late summer to homes in Lansing and East Lansing who can’t afford professional exclusions. The homes chosen for service will be based on scouting a number of residents and assessing them on a basis of achieve-ability and urgency. We hope to use these exclusions to help people who find professional service inaccessible and to help research exclusion methods, bat colony density, and begin to assess bat populations in the area.
Training will be provided, and through the program we hope you gain enough experience to help train future participants. Participation will not be on call, and we can work with student or public availability. People involved will become familiar with bio-acoustic monitoring, bat habitat construction and species identification.
This program will go from May 2018 until May 2019. This is a one year commitment and involves attending Monthly Team meetings for every month except December and July. Attending meetings is encouraged but not required. The end goal of this program is to progress our understanding of the movement and distribution of house dwelling bats in and around Lansing. The overall time commitment is low and an email will be sent out to volunteers when a project comes up and people can participate at their convenience.
***In order to participate, you must attend one of the 2 orientation sessions listed below. We will send out location and time to participants who have filled out this form***
We will send out specifics to you before the orientation about location and schedule for the evening. Food will be provided, and weather permitting, the orientation will end with a bat walk demo of the bio-acoustics monitoring and visit of a known colony of big brown bats.
If there are any questions about the program, please feel free to send an e-mail to
