Graduate Professional Development Sessions - Spring 2026
This series of virtual webinars and in-person workshops is designed for CSU Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows. Sessions this semester focus on topics identified as priorities through graduate student feedback: career readiness and financial success. We’ve designed these sessions to be interactive and engaging, offering practical insights from experts.

A description of each session is included below.

Registration is required a week in advance for in-person events and 24-hours in advance of virtual webinars.

Navigating Your Post-Graduate Career Path

Learn about two new career-readiness tools designed specifically for graduate students: Beyond the Professoriate and Beyond Graduate School. Discover how these resources can assist you with career exploration, job searching, interviewing, networking, and more. The session will also feature insights from the Career Center, which will highlight existing in-person services.

Session led by Dr. Sara Anne Tompkins, Associate Dean of Student Services at the Graduate School and Chase Weldon, Career Education Manager at CSU's Career Center.

Money Matters: Graduate Funding and Financial Wellness for Today and Tomorrow 

Learn how to strategically apply for graduate-level funding, what the differences between public and private funding sources are and gain valuable insights into managing finances effectively. The session will also feature expert advice on budgeting, saving, investing, and planning for long-term financial health. 

Session led by Mary Swanson, Program Director of the Office of Scholarship and Fellowship Advising and her colleague Alley Woods.

Know Your Financial Aid Options

Learn about what financial aid options are available for graduate school at CSU with a focus on unsubsidized, Grad PLUS, and alternative loans. Learn what to consider when weighing your options and how financial aid may be affected by scholarships, assistantships, or other stipends.

Session led by Emily Fitch, Assistant Director of Student Success in the Office of Financial Aid.

Writing a Powerful Teaching Philosophy/Statement

A Teaching Philosophy or Teaching Statement is one of the most important documents you'll include in applications for professorial positions in colleges and universities. This workshop offers insight into the purposes and common characteristics of this document, as well as practical strategies for developing a powerful Teaching Statement tailored to the position for which you're applying.

This session will provide students with exercises to develop their public-facing personal brand. If you want to freshen your LinkedIn profile or your web presence for the job market, Amy Cailene can help you design an authentic brand to connect with future employers and colleagues.
