We filed a complaint with New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas on October 26, 2021 asking him to investigate whether the UNM Foundation's $32 million of investments in fossil fuels violate New Mexico’s Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act. We believe this statute says that charities must invest in concert with their charitable mission. We have identified 28 companies in the UNM Foundation's public equity portfolio that operate in New Mexico and whose practices degrade the health of Tribal, Pueblo and New Mexico citizens and threaten the future of UNM students the University was formed to served.
You may read our complaint here:
https://climatedefenseproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/University-of-New-Mexico-Divestment-Complaint.pdfEven though the original filing date has passed, WE ARE STILL COLLECTING SIGNATURES because we will amend the Complaint at a later date with additional signatories and one correction (the amount UNM has invested in fossil fuels).
We have not come to this action lightly.
We have urged the UNM Leadership to act on MANY fronts on climate change from updating and recommitting to its 2009 Climate Action Plan, including restarting and reporting greenhouse gas emissions, to more visibly engaging with the community by holding a public climate change speakers series, for example. The Leadership has only offered us a string of widely spaced meetings that come to nothing.
We would also appreciate letters to Mr. Balderas's office urging him to thoroughly investigate and support our complaint.
