Survey on metrics and indicators in the agricultural sciences
We invite you to participate in a small survey to get a general idea how metrics and other indicators are used in the agricultural sciences. The survey is a next step in the work of a group of people from different institutions who are interested in this topic.

The group has found an organisational home as a “birds of a feather” group of the Interest Group Agricultural Data of the Research Data Alliance (RDA/IGAD). Find more information about the group check http://bit.ly/2xZGIA3 . We had two face-to-face meetings, the first at the Science and Technology Conference in Valencia, Spain, 16th of September 2016, the second on the RDA/IGAD pre-meeting, 4th of April 2017 in Barcelona. You can find a report of the latter meeting at http://bit.ly/2h4psCS .

We are working on a white paper on responsible use of indicators in agricultural science. A first draft outline is at http://bit.ly/2wX5t38 . Note that this is only a draft. In our discussions we found that most of these considerations are generic and applicable in other fields as well. We feel that we need to apply those considerations to the agricultural context.
In the draft there are many caveats about questionable use of indicators, but we should also share good practices and share experiences of methods that work well.

Please feel free to pass this survey to others who are well placed to respond. In the survey we ask for links to relevant web pages. If you have other document that you want to share, please e-mail them to ilkay.holt@fao.org and/or hugo@besemer.org

This survey closes October 20th 2017.
