Coastal Resilience Workshop: Sharing Indigenous Knowledge and Experience
September 23-24, 2019
Hosted by Janelle Knox-Hayes, at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, MIT
Sponsored by the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, and MIT CoLab

September 23: 20 Chimneys, MIT Student Center (https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=W20)
September 24: MIT DUSP, 9-255 (https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=9)

With this two-day workshop, we seek to promote scholarly and practice-oriented contributions rooted in knowledge sharing around experiences with climate adaptation and relocation. Participants will include members of the Isle de Jean Charles, LA band of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw tribe, members of the Yup'ik people from Newtok, AK, practitioners from Louisiana and Alaska, and scholars working on resettlement issues from DUSP. More broadly, this workshop will provide an opportunity for dialogue and knowledge sharing to better scope out the challenges to equitable relocation planning and the opportunities for uncovering latent and unaddressed values in the planning process.
