2025 MNS Workshop on open-source tools for behavioral quantification
Chania, Crete
June 09, 2025
14:00-16:45

See conference website for location details.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to build a behavioral quantification pipeline using two complementary tools: Lightning Pose for pose estimation and Variational Animal Motion Embedding (VAME) for unsupervised behavioral segmentation. Lightning Pose reduces video data into a time series of postural trajectories, defined by user-selected keypoints per frame, while VAME extracts repeated behavioral motifs from postural data. Using intuitive user interfaces and notebooks, participants will learn how to set up projects, process their video data, and analyze behavioral outputs without requiring advanced programming skills. Together, these tools form a powerful, integrated pipeline for state-of-the-art behavioral video analysis, fostering reproducibility, best practices, and new opportunities for scientific discovery across disciplines.

Requirements:
  • Laptop computer
  • Access to the internet
  • No programming experience necessary for following the full workshop, but basic python experience can be beneficial
  • You do not need to bring your own data, we will provide some for you

If you would like to provide information about your project (that will not be shared), please do so. Understanding the range of problems people are working on (e.g. model organism, spontaneous vs task-based behaviors, neural recording technology if any, etc.) will help us prepare for the workshop as well as plan future code development.
