Please explain in 300 words or less the way your company has innovated and the impact this has had on your business.IV saline is administered by doctors to replenish lost fluids, flush wounds, deliver medications, and sustain patients through surgery, dialysis, and chemotherapy. The medical bags containing a saline solution and similar liquids are essential products used every day in hospitals around the world. On a production line of these medical bags, human operators manually folding medical bags proved to be a lengthy and unprecise process. The folding was entirely subjective and required highly skilled operators to provide the necessary consistency to downstream processes. Ward Automation was approached to develop a machine that could automatically fold the bags.Following internal brainstorming meetings, an innovative concept evolved which would involve integrating three robots to new machine design. Robots have never before been used for this process. It was decided to build a proof of concept (POC) rig. From the success of the POC, a fully automated machine was developed and is now in full production producing 20 folded bags per minute. Bag size for this application is 340mm x 140mm; the required post folded size is 170mm x 32mm. Bags are bulk loaded on to a conveyor, and by using robotics, vision systems and unique mechanisms, they are folded and placed into thermoformed trays. The tray handling system allows for stacks to be loaded, de-nested and fed out in stacks again. The machine resulted in an increased production with precise, consistently processed bags and a reduced amount of waste. The technologies deployed in this machine can be adapted to other pre and post folded bags sizes. A paper band or clip can also retain the bags.
