Art Selection
Year-long Art Electives: Early Middle School years provide students an exposure to a variety of arts electives. Students in 7th and 8th grades will have the opportunity to select one art elective to study in depth for the entire year. These courses will meet 5 times out of the 7-day rotation.

Advanced Band
Advanced Band is a yearlong music elective composed primarily of 7th ad 8th grade students who have at least two years of instrumental music experience. (Exceptions are made for less experienced musicians who are in the 7th or 8th grades and are willing to take private lessons.) Students will continue to develop skills on one band instrument (choices include flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, horn, baritone horn, tuba, and multi-percussion-- snare drum, timpani and mallet instruments). Advanced Band will prepare for and perform several concerts during the school year.

The yearlong Art elective for 7th and 8th graders continues to provide an introduction to the fundamental elements of design. The first semester focuses primarily on different mediums in drawing. The second semester focuses on painting and various forms of 3-dimensional art. Art history and cultural art of the world are both integrated into many of the projects throughout the year.

7th and 8th Grade Chorus is a yearlong music elective for 7th and 8th graders. Students will participate in a performance-based choral ensemble. They will learn about sight reading, key signatures, musical terminology, and other musical elements while they prepare and perform music from different styles, genres and time periods. The Middle School Advanced Chorus will perform at several concerts for students and families throughout the year.

The yearlong Drama elective for 7th and 8th graders provides an in-depth introduction to the world of theatre. The students are exposed to musical theatre as they will learn songs, composers, and lyricists who have contributed to musical theatre history. Students will learn about the auditioning process by creating a resume and learning a monologue and play theater games that reinforce acting skills in order to prepare for the end of the year one-act play that is performed for parents and the student body. Students in the 7th and 8th grades may assist backstage during a main stage production through an internship program. Depending on the musical, these students may e eligible to audition for the spring production.

Student priority for electives is based on the date and time in which this registration form is completed and submitted (i.e., earlier submission date of registration form results in increased likelihood of placement in top-choice elective). A timestamp will be recorded when this form is submitted. In the event multiple forms are submitted for the same student, the one with the latest timestamp will be used. We will do everything possible to honor top choices for all students.

Please note that students are expected to use each of the elective options below once. Failure to do so may result in your registration being processed last.

Language Selection:
7th grade students will select to continue Spanish or enroll in Language Acquisition for their seventh grade year. Seventh grade Spanish meets three times a rotation and will continue your student's development in the speaking and writing skills of the Spanish language from their sixth grade year. Language Acquisition will help students better understand grammar and vocabulary, and prepare them for learning other languages in the future by providing an in‐depth study of language development, the systems and structures of languages, and common root words with their origins. Language Acquisition meets twice a rotation providing your student with an extra study hall each rotation.

Study Halls and Learning Academy:
All seventh grade students will be in a study hall that meets two times in a seven-day rotation during the year. Learning Academy Coaching takes the place of regular study hall rotations and teacher help time that is regularly scheduled during break, and is available for an additional fee. Coaching is designed for students in grades 5-8 to reinforce academic content and skills, test preparation, and organizational methods. If you would like to enroll your student in Learning Academy Coaching instead of regular study halls next year, please contact Kristen Allen for details at kallen@gastonday.org.
