Call for story pitches!
We are looking for true, personal stories about what it's like being a scientist with a disability/medical condition/mental illness/learning disability, all broadly defined. These stories will be part of a book (!), tentatively titled UNCHARTED, co-edited by Skylar Bayer and Gabi Serrato Marks. We are in the process of completing a book proposal and have been in touch with a university press (feel free to email us for more details). If this form is not accessible to you, please email us at the addresses below.
Details [bulleted list]:
- The final written pieces will be anywhere from 750 - 2,000 words.
- Timeline: long! First drafts would be due months from now.
- We plan to give contributors a small honorarium from the publisher, but it will most likely be a small amount (<$100). We are also considering crowd funding. Please contact us for more details about this, or with ideas for funding sources!
- Your name and contact information and story will not be shared with anyone else while we collect pitches. It is possible to publish anonymously.
- We are generally very open in our thinking about this project. We have contributors who have experience with food allergies, addiction, pelvic conditions, insomnia, chronic pain, and so much more. If you think your story might fit, it probably does!
- You are free to pitch your story elsewhere simultaneously, we just ask that you let us know if it is accepted
- This form will be receiving pitches between Jan. 14th and Feb. 15th, 2020.
- Comments or questions: contact Skylar Bayer (

A note about us: We care about this book project because we both have chronic health conditions that have impacted our scientific careers. We are really committed to doing this right. If you have any concerns about this form, our project, or what stories we plan to include, please reach out to us.
