2026/2027 MHL Title Submission Form
Use this form to nominate a title for consideration for the Maud Hart Lovelace Award
The following Criteria are also set on the nominated titles:
1. Books must be available in paperback before or on announcement of new nominees. However, up to two titles total available in hardcover only may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.
2. The author must be living in North America, and any one author may not have works included on the final list in 2 consecutive years. Only one title by an author may be included in any year.
3. The copyright of a title must be within the last three years (2023, 2024, 2025).
4. Nominees will be primarily fiction and represent a variety of genres. The books cannot be classified as picture books, but may include narrative nonfiction or memoirs.
5. Interest levels for the nominated titles range from the 3rd grade through the 8th grade.
Ten books are nominated for Division I, grades 3-5.
6. Ten books are nominated for Division II, grades 6-8. No more than four titles will overlap both divisions and will be readable by both divisions. A review from a standard selection source must be available for all titles considered for nomination. Any title nominated which contains mature subject matter will receive a “Mature Readers” designation.
7. Nominated titles are not part of a formula series (for example Magic Tree House, Nancy
Drew, Dear America, media tie-ins, etc.). A sequel or numbered series will not automatically be considered a formula series, but quality, authorship, and ability of the title to stand alone will be considered.
8. Books based on movies or television shows are not eligible for nominations unless the book preceded the movie or television production.
9. Titles may include a variety of genres: sports stories, mysteries, animal stories, survival
stories, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and stories of regional interest or by a
Minnesota author.
10. Titles selected will reflect cultural, ethnic, and gender diversity as well as a fair depiction of any characters with disabilities.
Please limit submissions to 10 titles in a single selection year.
