We have a lot more ideas for improving the tech community, encouraging startups, job creation, retaining highschool/college talent, etc. Any interest in helping or leading any of the following initiatives?
The plan is maybe a monthly meeting for anyone to attend to participate, lead and accomplish the goals below that people feel strongly about.
Tech Education Classes (a la General Assembly in NYC)
Startup Accelerator (Summer 2014? a la TechStars or Y Combinator)
Startup Week (May 2014?)
Tech Jobs List (consolidated listing of all local tech jobs)
Made in Buffalo website & logo (like Made in NYC --
http://nytm.org/made
)
Highschool reach-out (speeches to Math classes about entrepreneurship, shadowing programs, internships, local tech employers, colleges [RIT, UB], events/meetups, techies to email w/q's)
College reach-out (Dean of CS & rest of college; Professor outreach; Speeches to classes about entrepreneurship, internships, local tech employers, events/meetups, shadowing programs, techies to email w/q's)
Flown-in Speakers (from NYC; UX/UI/Back-End/JS/Mobile/etc; 26x-52x/year; panel and/or talk; Q&A; individual attention w/startups & other)
Holiday video celebrating the Buffalo Startups (Fall 2014)
Website for single point of contact of all the Buffalo tech/startup activity (points to various other sites, but an entry point for anyone new)
A list of principles that our community embraces (i.e. "give before you get", willing to help anyone new, meet anyone new; making anyone visiting or here feel like Buffalo is super open to helping out)
Buffalo Infographic (of how awesome Buffalo is, see
http://boulder.is/
)
Buffalo internships (and non-Buffalo placement too!) (see
http://university.firstround.com
-- 1 application, 170 internships you get applied to)
Buffalo Shadowing & Employer Open Houses (focused on highschool and college students, but open to anyone to learn about tech careers in the area)
