HOW DO I CALCULATE THE AMOUNT OF SOIL OR COMPOST I NEED?========================================================You should calculate the volume of how much soil/compost you will need based on your the number of inches you are going to add. Here is a pretty good calculator for garden beds. http://www.gardeners.com/how-to/soil-calculatorPlease note, if you are adding four inches to a bed already filled for the most part, you will want to calculate four inches depth, not the actual depth of your garden beds. For example:An empty bed 4ft wide by 8 ft long by 2 feet deep requires a little more than 2 cubic yards of soil to fill it. A filled bed 4 ft wide by 8 ft long by 2 ft deep that simply needs to be topped off with a four inch layer of compost/soil requires about .39 cubic yard (a little over 1/3 cubic yard). So you could top off about 6 beds four inches with 2 cubic yards of soil/ compost.
HOW DO I MIX IN MY COMPOST?===========================If you are mixing in COMPOST into the top of a pre-existing soil filled bed, the general rule of thumb is: For 6 inch deep beds- Mix 1 inch layer of compost 2 inches deep. For 12 inch deep beds- Mix 2 inch layer compost 4 inches deep. For 18 inch deep beds- Mix 3 inch layer compost 6 inches deep. For 24 inch deep beds- Mix 4 inch layer compost 8 inches deep.
