You are invited to take part in a research study titled, Demarginalized: How Teachers Can Be Inclusive of Students Who Speak African American English. The purpose of this study is to explore the opinions of P-12 teachers in the U.S. about African American English (AAE), describe their perceptions on students’ use of AAE in the classrooms, and explore their feelings of preparedness to teach Standard English to AAE-speaking students.
Participation in this study involves completing an online survey which collects some of your demographic information and explores your opinions about African American English (AAE). The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
If you are selected to continue in the study, the researcher will interview you about your perceptions of students’ use of AAE in the classroom and your feelings of preparedness to teach AAE-speaking students. The interview will be conducted over the telephone, will be audio-recorded, and will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
If you are interested in participating, please submit your email address so that you can receive an informed consent form that has detailed information about the research.
