Laptops for Families via Pittsburgh Organizations
In light of COVID-19 crisis, Computer Reach is partnered with Neighborhood Allies and the University of Pittsburgh to quickly refurbish and release Dell i5 laptops.

Due to the volume of demand, at this stage, we are working with *local non-profit organizations (501c3)* ONLY to identify individual families and distribute laptops accordingly. We *cannot* accommodate individual requests. Further, if your families are enrolled at Pittsburgh Public Schools, please wait for distribution through your child's school.

Each laptop has been fitted with a new hard drive, new 90watt charger, Linux software, and is quality tested and cleaned. The laptops will be ready by the last week in April.

Please fill out the following form and we will be in touch soon to arrange pickup.

Corporate and foundation donors across Pittsburgh have generously contributed to help us sponsor the costs of a limited amount of laptops. You can donate and/or learn more at beyondthelaptops.org.

FAQs
What is Linux?

Linux 18.04 is an open-source operating system, typically with open-source software. It is similar to Windows and MacOS in its variability and usage. The software that will come with your Linux computer will be: Libre Office (equivalent to Microsoft Office).... Firefox/Google Chrome (Internet Browsers)... VLC (A multimedia video/audio player). We have had no issues in the past with recipient families, who quickly learned to use Linux. Windows licenses can be purchased for an additional fee, or the user can acquire and download Windows on their own at a later date.

Why are we doing this?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are aware that students will be completing their schooling online for the foreseeable future, and not every student may have access to a computer at home. We are giving out laptops to families that may not have one so that students can continue to be successful in their education. We also hope to provide laptops to families who need to search for workforce development training or job opportunities during this challenging time.

What about Internet?

Starting immediately, Comcast is offering 60 days of free internet service through their Internet Essentials program. People can sign up at www.internetessentials.com or call 1-855-846-8376. In addition to 60 days of free internet service, Comcast is providing a number of other critically helpful initiatives including making Xfinity WiFi free for everyone. For more information, go to https://corporate.comcast.com/covid-19.

Do we get to keep these laptops?

Our partnered community organizations can determine the most responsible way to leverage the technology, but the goal of the project is to get families sustainably connected. PPS will distribute computers to students through their own program, which has the added benefit of periodic tech support and updates. While the PPS laptops technically belong to the district, they will be in family's homes throughout operating school years. By contrast, laptops donated through community organizations are a one-off delivery and become the responsibility of the bearer to maintain.
